In this age of planes, trains and automobiles, it’s the norm to take a trip by the quickest and most economical means necessary. Even if we’re going somewhere by bike, then these days there are options of electric bike, hybrid, or scooter, with motors, batteries, and greaseless bearings all geared to get you from A to B at increased kilometers per hour.
Only if we take a cycling holiday do we set our need for speed aside and decide to slow our pace. But the truth is that the humble bicycle – the original pushbike – is an incredibly exciting addition to any kind of travel holiday, particularly a trip that is taken by car. In this case, an inexpensive bike rack attached to the hood of your vehicle will allow you to bring your bike with you on vacation, and there are a whole host of benefits to bringing it along with you.
You can whip your pushbike off your roof rack any time and just get out and explore the world around you. Park up, push off, and discover the location you find yourself in, essentially!
It’s a way to ‘be quick’ while at the same time being slow. The world goes past but not so fast that you miss a thing. You can stop easily if something rouses your curiosity, too.
You’re in the world, not separate from it. Every other means of transport is the equivalent to being inside a bubble, whether that’s a car, train, or whatever else – this can feel safe, but also highly unnatural. Your interaction with your actual location is kept at a minimum. On a pushbike, however, you are fully in the world and this is both mindful as well as enlivening.
The key word in pushbike is ‘push’. You are responsible for your own speed, route, and pace. This is a good way to increase self-will, self-reliance, and self-esteem.
You can go places a car can’t. If you spot a good, well, spot – a country road, a lane, an alley, a cliffside path, etc. – you can exchange your 4 wheels for 2 and get going along it. Cars can sometimes be a hindrance when it comes to exploring a site thoroughly.
Connection with nature is a plus that comes from being in the world. You get to smell the roses, literally, as well as hear the birds, feel the sun and wind, admire the trees, gasp at the views. Sunset and sunrise are best enjoyed from the seat of a pushbike and nature, as we all know, provides all sorts of benefits for our mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
Finally, travel with a pushbike means that you will, generally, increase your physical health, as you step out of your car and use your own legs and body to power your motion. This brings additional wellbeing benefits, but isn’t it great to feel great, too?
With so many positives, the only negative might sometimes be the elements themselves, but for the main part, travel with a pushbike is a pretty pleasing option.
